The Mighty Rakaia

The most dramatic and spectacular scenery in this wonderful playground of ours has to be the mighty Rakaia gorge. Tall bluffs tower above the river, carved out by the clear blue water that braids its way right from the heart of the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. You can’t but be in awe of this geological wonder that has been created over millions of years.

Adventure is abound here. If you’re up for an adrenalin rush then take your jet boat for a spin. If you don’t have one, that’s all good - your neighbour most likely will! Get the family together for a barbecue on the beach and let the kids discover all the wonders of this incredible natural wonder. There are rocks to climb, pools to throw stones into, and sand to dig and mould. An unforgettable experience for any child that makes growing up here so special.

Wander along the walkway on the north side of the river and follow the historic ferryman's trail to the cottage that they lived in and discover the old Snowden coal mine.

This is a unique and awe-inspiring experience that is special to our place. In the words of iconic Kiwi character Fred Dagg, we just don’t know lucky we are.
